Year 1

Welcome to Year 1!

HOMEWORK UPDATE: We now have an email address for the children to email their electronic homework to their class teachers. Please make sure the email contains the child’s name and the name of their class teacher.

We have revisited King George V Park and we were all amazed to see how the wild flower seeds that we scattered in March have become a beautiful flower meadow.

KS1 Sports Day

Wow! What a fantastic KS1 sports day! Thank you so much to all the spectators who came along and cheered the children on. The children were brilliantly enthusiastic and they participated in lots of fun activities including an egg and spoon challenge, bean bag throw and football dribbling!

A big thank you to the Year 6s for their help and support during the afternoon, helping to run activities and lead groups.

Also a big thank you to Mrs Kendall for organising the whole afternoon.

As part of World Book Day, we held a competition where the children had to design a new book mark for their year group. We had some fantastic entries. We would like to thank school council for deciding the winners. A big well done to all of our winners:

Year 1 – Evie

Year 2 – Ava

Year 3 – Oliver

Year 4 – Isla

Year 5 – Evie

Year 6 – Rebecca

Keep checking for any more competitions.

Thank you for coming to our class assembly. The children had a fantastic time. They all enjoyed sharing their work. Well done to all the children in Mrs Miller's class.

Summer Term 2016

For the first half term the topic in Year 1 is ‘Up and Away’.  Within History children will be finding out about the Montgolfier Brothers’ First Hot Air Balloon Flight.  Learning will then be linked to subjects across the curriculum, including; making papier mashie balloons in Art, writing reports and fictional stories in English and looking at aerial views, maps and environmental features in Geography.

Later in the term the Year 1 topic will be ‘Down and Under.’  Within the topic children find out about the history of mining.  The topic is linked to leaning in Geography and Science.  Children learn to name the seas surrounding the UK and classify animals that live in the sea and underground.  Within English children write dairy entries in role as Victorian coalminers, listen to Scottish folk tales of ‘Selkies’ and write fictional reports about animals.

Throughout the term year one will visit King George V Park to find out about seasonal changes and take part in sowing wild flowers.

KS1 Football Club Update

The Coaches will be teaching multiskills to year 1 and tennis to year 2. Please ensure that your child brings their PE kit suitable for indoor and outdoor activities in to school on a Monday morning so that they have it all week and take it home on a Friday.

Sports Relief 2016

A big congratulations to all the children who helped raise money for sports relief this year. Sports Relief is part of the Comic Relief Charity and raises money for worthy causes both within and outside of the UK.

For our fundraising activities we decided to do a sponsored mile. The children could run or walk for a mile around the school’s playground. Also, we had a sporty dress up day where all the children looked fantastic.

This year we raised an amazing £2223.50!

We would like to thank everyone for your continued support. We couldn’t have done it without you.

Museum Visit

What a fantastic Victorian Day! We all travelled back in time to see what it was like to be a Victorian child.

Spring 2016

For the first half term the topic for Year 1 children will be ‘Toys’.  Children will learn about present day toys and compare to toys from the past, focusing on Victorian toys.  Within science children classify natural and man-made materials, investigate the properties of materials and label the materials used to make toys.  Computing focuses on how to use the internet safely and develops skills in collecting images and presenting information electronically.  Within design and technology children explore, design and make wheeled vehicles. In addition, a dance coach will work with children to create and dances around the theme of ‘toys’.  RE will include learning about Easter and the Parables that Jesus told.

Later in the term our topic will be Traditional Stories. The topic will creatively link stories from around the world to geography; locating countries on the map. Science will include growing plants, making healthy picnics and selecting and testing materials for building.  In addition, children will continue to learn about seasonal changes including temperature, daylight, plants and animals.

Our Class Targets

Every half term every class decides upon a target. They have to work together to achieve their target 100 times. If they complete this they will have a reward afternoon. The reward is also decided by the class.

Mrs Miller's class target: To tuck our chairs under and put our pencils and crayons away.

Mrs Tranter's class target: To line up quietly in 10 seconds.

Good luck to both classes smiley

Autumn 2015

We have lots of exciting things planned this term linked to our autumn topics.

For the first half term Year 1 children will be doing work based around the topic of All About Me and working closely with Foundation 2 to support transition.

Later in the term our topics will be Special Days.

Also, we will be finding out about Guy Fawkes.

We will also be looking at important festivals and celebrations like Harvest, Sukkot, Hanukkah and Christmas.
